Can Journaling and Coloring Offer Us a Path to Peace, Healing, and Deeper Faith?

Journaling, Coloring, and Prayer: A Path to Peace, Healing, and Deeper Faith

In today’s fast-paced and chaotic (not to mention sad-filled) world, many adults are rediscovering the power of simple practices like journaling and coloring—not just as hobbies, but as soul-nourishing tools that support mental health and spiritual well-being.

These creative outlets allow us to slow down, process our emotions, and reconnect with our inner selves.

When paired with prayer, meditation, and Scripture reading, these practices can become part of a transformative daily rhythm that brings clarity, peace, and a stronger sense of purpose. Adult coloring has risen in popularity in recent years, and for good reason.

Why coloring & journaling helps

The repetitive motion of coloring within lines helps the brain shift into a meditative state, calming the nervous system and reducing stress.

Similarly, journaling allows us to express emotions that might otherwise stay buried—fears, joys, questions, or prayers.

It can become a deeply honest space where we pour out our hearts to God, just as David did in the Psalms. Adding a faith-based focus to these practices—such as reflecting on a Bible verse while coloring or journaling our thoughts after reading a parable—infuses them with spiritual depth and intention.

Can trusting God help us?

Scripture itself is filled with powerful stories that not only guide us morally but also remind us of God’s constant presence.

Consider Jonah, who tried to run from God’s calling and ended up in the belly of a great fish.

Or Daniel, who stood firm in faith even when thrown into the lions’ den.

Their stories show us that fear and adversity are part of life—but so is deliverance when we trust in the One who holds our future.

Jesus’ parables, like the Prodigal Son, remind us of God’s unconditional love and the power of redemption.

Reflecting on these stories through journaling or meditative coloring allows us to internalize their meaning and see how they apply to our modern lives.

Add Prayer

Adding prayer into this practice creates a full circle of healing. We are not just processing—we are communing with a higher being.

We are surrendering our burdens, our questions, and our hopes. Meditating on God's Word helps renew our minds and keeps us grounded when life becomes overwhelming.

It's in these quiet moments—pen in hand, colors on the page, prayers rising—that we often find clarity and renewed strength.

Ultimately, learning to trust God is not a one-time decision—it’s a daily act of surrender and faith.

Through creative expression, quiet reflection, and Scripture-based meditation, we draw closer to God and allow Him to shape our thoughts and hearts.

In a world that often feels confusing, fast-moving, and painful, anchoring ourselves in God's truth helps us live with more peace, compassion, and resilience. And as we grow stronger in faith, we become better humans—more loving, more patient, and more equipped to help others navigate this hard world too.

Let your journal be a sacred space. Let your coloring book be a prayer in motion. Let your faith lead you toward healing and transformation.

Trusting in God doesn’t erase life’s challenges—but it does give us the strength and wisdom to face them with courage and hope.
